Cretan Countryside Escape – History, Villages & Picnic by the River
Leave the city behind and discover the authentic side of Crete through a relaxed journey across historic fortresses, traditional villages, local producers, and unspoiled nature.
Our day begins at the hilltop fortress of Koules Fortress of Aptera, above ancient Aptera, where breathtaking panoramic views unfold across Souda Bay, the Apokoronas valley, Souda islet, and the historic Izzedin Fortress. Here, guests learn why this strategic location served as a natural defensive stronghold for centuries.
We then continue to the peaceful village of Armenoi to admire its beautiful Venetian church and enjoy a relaxing coffee beneath the shade of a centuries-old plane tree. Local delicacies — cheeses and traditional cold cuts — are carefully selected for our picnic later in the day.
Monastery Heritage & Riverside Picnic
At the historic Monastery of Agios Georgios at Karydi, guests explore the charming monastery grounds and a traditional stone olive mill, a timeless reminder of Crete’s olive-oil heritage. We collect fresh monastery olive oil to savor during our countryside feast. Our journey continues to Georgioupoli, where free time is combined with a visit to a traditional wood-fired bakery to gather fresh bread, rusks, and local produce — the final touches for an authentic farm-to-table experience.
The day concludes in nature at Platanakia, beside the refreshing Kiliaris River, where we enjoy a relaxed picnic under the shade of plane trees. Together we taste the fresh products collected throughout the day — cheeses, bread, olives, vegetables, olive oil, and local wine — just like the simple countryside meals shared during olive harvest season.
